BIBLIOGRAPHICAL NOTE
I. The eight essays of THE SUPRAMENTAL MANIFESTATION, the last of Sri Aurobindo’s prose writings, first appeared in the quarterly Bulletin of Physical Education in 1949-50. They were reprinted in book form by the Sri Aurobindo Ashram Press in 1952 under the title The Supramental Manifestation upon Earth. Sri Aurobindo Library, New York, published them in 1953 under the caption The Mind of Light.
II. The essays constituting THE PROBLEM OF REBIRTH first appeared serially in the Arya between 1915 and 1920. The first section, "Rebirth and Karma", consists of a number of independent articles which nevertheless make up a developing series. The third section, "Higher Lines of Karma", remained incomplete but minor revisions were made in it by Sri Aurobindo. All these articles were issued in book form in 1952 and reprinted in 1969 with a letter by Sri Aurobindo appended to explain why he had not permitted their publication.
III & IV. The essays in these two sections, (except "Ourselves") appeared originally in the Arya. They were revised and published in three books. Evolution, The Superman and Ideals and Progress and they have been reissued a numb-r of times. The two essays, "Evolution and . Involution" and "The Ascending Unity", -first included in The Problem of Rebirth, have been shifted to section III of the present volume. "Ourselves", given as a message to The Standard-Bearer in 1920, is being included here for the first time. V. HERACLITUS appeared serially in the Arya in 1916-17. It was subsequently revised and published in book form in 1941 and reprinted in 1947 and 1969.
VI. THOUGHTS AND GLIMPSES appeared in the Arya in 1915-1917. It was issued in book form in 1941 and reprinted in 1947, 1968 and 1970.
VII. In the Arya, under the title QUESTION OF THE MONTH, appeared five questions and answers between 1914-1915. Except for the fourth — "Animal Souls, Subtle Bodies" — they were included in the book Views and Reviews published in 1941 and reprinted in 1946 and 1954.
VIII. THE YOGA AND ITS OBJECTS first appeared in 1921 and has since been issued ten times between 1921 and 1968. |
